The 736-acre Union Reservoir is the perfect summer hotspot for both Longmont locals and tourists. With tons of water sports and other outdoor activities in the Union Reservoir Nature Area, you could easily spend an entire day at this natural lake just east of the city of Longmont. Boating, kayaking, fishing, and swimming are just a few of the many activities you can enjoy at Union Reservoir.

Activities and Events at Union Reservoir

Whether on or off the water, there’s plenty to keep you busy. The reservoir allows wakeless boating and you can rent paddleboards and kayaks. You can participate in one of the Union Sailing Club’s weekly races, youth activities, or sailing lessons. Anglers are welcome on the reservoir too and can expect to find Walleye, Carp, Trout, Crappie, Catfish, Bass, Sunfish, Wiper, and Tiger Muskie.

While camping is not allowed at Union Reservoir, there are plenty of spots for picnicking with grills and tables. And of course, the reservoir is the perfect place in Longmont to take a dip in warm weather, with a designated swim beach actively monitored by lifeguards.

Summer isn’t the only time you can find happenings at Union Reservoir, either. The area is open from November 1 to February 28 for the winter season and you still take your canoe, kayak, windsail, or carry-on vessel out on the water during these months.

Union Reservoir Nature Area isn’t just a big lake and recreation area. It’s also a community gathering place that hosts triathlons, festivals, boating events, and other group activities. You can check Union’s website for updates on activities or special opening and closing times for triathlons.

Plan Your Visit

The Union Reservoir Nature Area is located at 461 Co Rd 26, Longmont, CO 80504. You can access it either at the lakeside park, where there’s plenty of parking and paddleboard rental, or head to the Union Sailing Club a little further down County Road 26. The Union Reservoir Nature Area’s hours vary throughout the season, opening at either 6:00 am or 7:00 am and closing between 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm (6:00 pm closing time in the winter season). The Union Reservoir does have daily admission fees, ranging from $2.00 to $12.00 depending on the vehicle or watercraft you bring in with you. Season passes are available, and you can also rent out picnic shelters in advance for special events.
